Custodian and janitor interviews test reliability, safe handling of cleaning chemicals, the ability to work alone to a standard without supervision, and how you deal with the people in the building, from a teacher who needs a spill handled now to a tenant who complains. Expect questions about your routine, floor care, chemical safety, security of the building, and your availability for evenings and weekends. The housekeeping skills overlap with housekeeper interview questions, the building-systems side with maintenance technician interview questions, and the question every facilities manager asks is how do you work with limited supervision. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.

Custodian interview questions and what strong answers contain

  1. Walk me through your routine for a floor or wing. Order: trash, dusting high to low, restrooms with the right sequence, floors last; checklists; what you report.
  2. How do you handle cleaning chemicals safely? Read the labels and safety data sheets, correct dilution, never mix, gloves and eye protection, ventilation, labelled bottles, secure storage.
  3. Describe your experience with floor care. Stripping and waxing, burnishing, carpet extraction, auto-scrubbers; what you have run.
  4. How do you clean up a bodily fluid spill? Bloodborne pathogen training, PPE, approved disinfectant, contact time, disposal, documentation.
  5. You find a door propped open or an unfamiliar person in the building after hours. What do you do? Secure the door, do not confront, call security or the supervisor, report.
  6. A teacher or tenant complains that their area is not clean. What do you do? Listen, look, fix it now if you can, find out what they expect, follow up.
  7. How do you work when nobody is watching? Checklists, a routine, standards you set yourself, pride in the building.
  8. What are your availability and reliability like? Honest shifts; attendance record; transport.
  9. How do you prioritise when something urgent comes up mid-shift? Safety first (spills, hazards), then the schedule; communicate what moves.
  10. What equipment can you operate? Honest list; willingness to be trained.

Sample answers

How do you handle cleaning chemicals safely?

I read the label and the safety data sheet for anything new, and I follow the dilution ratios exactly, because stronger is not cleaner, it is just more dangerous and more expensive. I never mix products, bleach with anything in particular, and I keep bottles labelled and stored locked away from the public. I wear gloves and eye protection for anything that says to, and I ventilate when I am stripping floors. If I get a chemical on my skin or in my eyes I know where the eyewash is and I report it. In fifteen years I have had one incident, early on, and I learned from it.

A teacher or tenant complains that their area is not clean. What do you do?

I go and look with them if I can, because half the time it is something specific, a bin missed or a window someone wants done, and I can fix it on the spot. I ask what they expect so I know next time, and I do not get defensive; it is their room and they are in it all day. If it is something outside my schedule or my area I tell them who to ask and I pass it on myself. Then I check that area the next shift to make sure it stayed fixed. Most complaints go away when people see you took it seriously.

You find a door propped open or an unfamiliar person in the building after hours. What do you do?

I close and secure the door and I note the time. If there is someone in the building I do not recognise, I do not confront them; I keep my distance, I call security or my supervisor, and I describe who and where. If they approach me I am polite and I ask if I can help them find who they are looking for, while I stay near an exit. I write it up afterwards. In a school especially, the building's security is part of the job, and I take it as seriously as the floors.

Mistakes to avoid

A practice plan for the week before

  1. Write your routine for one area in order, with the products and equipment you use.
  2. Review chemical safety: labels, dilution, never mix, PPE, storage, safety data sheets.
  3. Prepare a complaint story and a security story.
  4. Run a mock interview from the posting and answer the working-alone and priorities questions aloud.
  5. Prepare questions about area size, team, equipment condition, supplies and shift coverage.
