Cashier interviews are short and practical. Managers want to know you will count money accurately, stay friendly when the line is long, handle an upset customer and be completely honest. Most cashier interview questions cover your availability, a busy-store scenario or two, and why you want the job. Many applicants have never worked before, so first-job answers are welcome.

Below: the questions, four sample answers, what managers listen for, a table and a one-week plan.

Four sample answers

Wrong change: “I’d stay polite and not argue. I’d count the change back with the customer, and if it was still unclear, follow the store’s procedure, such as asking a manager to check the drawer. If I made the mistake, I’d apologize and fix it right away.”

Long line, chatty customer: “I’d keep chatting while I scan, so I’m friendly and fast at the same time. If someone needs help I can’t give quickly, I’d call for a manager or another register instead of making everyone wait.”

The friend who asks a favor: “I’d politely say no and ring everything up as usual. It isn’t worth my job or the store’s trust. If they pushed, I’d tell my manager, because honesty with money is the most important part of this job.”

First job: “This would be my first job, but I’m used to responsibility. I ran the cash box at our school bake sale and my totals matched every day. I’m friendly, I learn quickly and I’m available evenings and weekends.”

What store managers listen for

Managers listen for honesty, reliability (do your availability and transport add up?), a friendly tone and calm under pressure. They are not expecting retail jargon. A clear yes to “Can you work weekends?” and a sincere smile often matter more than experience. Our availability answer guide helps you say it clearly.

A one-week plan for your cashier interview

  1. Write down your availability, how you will get to work and any days you cannot work.
  2. Practice counting back change at home with real coins and notes.
  3. Write 40-word answers to the three “about you” questions.
  4. Run an AI mock interview with the job ad pasted in.
  5. Practice the friend-asks-a-favor answer until it sounds firm but kind.
  6. Visit the store, watch the checkout and note one thing you like.
  7. Choose neat clothes, plan to arrive ten minutes early, and rest.

Practice before you walk in

Cashier interviews are usually in person, sometimes after a short phone screen. Use CoPilot Interview beforehand: its free AI mock interviews read questions aloud from the job ad and your resume and score each spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer, which helps most if English is your second language. Our retail and warehouse interview page has more.

Live help from the AI interview assistant is for online interviews where it is allowed, and it hears audio your computer plays, not a call that rings only on your mobile. Follow your employer's rules; for in-person interviews, use it to prepare, not in the room. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What should I say in a cashier interview with no experience?

Talk about times you handled money, followed instructions or helped people, such as school fundraisers, babysitting, volunteering or a family business. Show you are honest, friendly and reliable, and give clear availability. Many stores train first-time cashiers.

How long is a cashier interview?

Many are short, sometimes just a few questions with a store manager, and some stores hold group or on-the-spot interviews at hiring events. Length varies by store and employer, so prepare short, clear answers rather than long stories.

Is there a math test for cashier jobs?

Some employers include a short math or cash-handling check and others do not. When there is one, it usually covers making change and simple addition. Practice counting back change at home so you feel confident either way.

What should I wear to a cashier interview?

Wear clean, neat, comfortable clothes a step above the store’s uniform, such as plain trousers and a collared shirt or blouse. Avoid strong perfume and large logos or slogans. Looking tidy matters more than looking expensive.
