The Canva interview process has four main stages, according to Canva's own careers site: a Zoom call with someone from Talent Acquisition, a first interview with your potential coach (leader) or a close teammate, a take-home challenge, and a final interview where you present your challenge and answer behavioural questions. Canva says the process generally takes 4 to 5 weeks from the first recruiter conversation to a decision, and engineering roles follow a different path with technical interviews instead of a take-home task.
This guide sets out each stage exactly as Canva publishes it (as of October 2026), the Skills Hiring Framework and values the interview questions are built on, how to prepare, and practice questions we wrote. Canva is headquartered in Sydney, so we also cover the Australian context.
What are the stages of the Canva interview process?
Canva's How we hire page says each role, level and team is different, but the process has four consistent components. Here they are side by side for most roles and for engineering:
| Stage | Most roles (as Canva describes it) | Engineering roles (as Canva describes it) |
|---|---|---|
| Round 1: Zoom call | A chat with Talent Acquisition about your aspirations and experience; Canva shares more about the role and its culture | The same call, plus some technical questions |
| Round 2: First interview | With your potential coach (leader) or someone you would work closely with; insight into the team, the day-to-day and your impact | A peer-to-peer technical interview including a problem-solving challenge |
| Round 3: Take-home challenge | A challenge brief to complete in your own time and present back, to show how you work | No take-home challenge; another opportunity to showcase your work, which the recruiter explains |
| Round 4: Final interview | Meet several people you would work closest with, take them through your challenge findings, and answer behavioural questions aligned to the Skills Hiring Framework | A 3-hour interview combining technical problem solving with questions about your experience |
Before Round 1, Canva says you will receive an email straight after you apply, and another update about 1 to 2 weeks later; if you are successful, the recruiter books a Zoom call. Canva also says its recruiters usually contact you from an @canva.com email address (or through a trusted agency or Canva-approved recruitment platform), and that someone contacting you from a personal email address such as Gmail and claiming to represent Canva is not Canva. That is worth knowing, because job scams that impersonate well-known employers are common.
How long does the Canva interview process take?
Canva says that, while each role and level differs, its process generally takes 4 to 5 weeks from the initial conversation with your recruiter through to a decision, and that your recruiter will keep you updated on any change to the timeline. Along the way you will usually meet your recruiter, your potential coach and some fellow teammates.
Plan your take-home challenge into that timeline. If you are working full-time, ask the recruiter early how long you will have for the brief so you can block out time.
The Skills Hiring Framework and Canva values
Canva says every role is supported by a growth and development framework, and that it embeds this into the hiring process and uses it to structure the interview questions. The framework has four pillars:
- Craft: honing your skill set and applying the tools of your trade to solve complex problems. Each specialty has its own skill-based curriculum.
- Strategy: solving problems in the most effective way and spotting opportunities to move the company forward.
- Communication: constructive communication and sharing that creates alignment within your team and across the company.
- Leadership and coaching: supporting and empowering others to achieve their goals, especially important if you lead projects or teams.
Canva's careers site says its values shape everything from the way it hires to its growth framework. Its About page lists six values: Be a force for good; Be a good human; Empower others; Make complex things simple; Pursue excellence; and Set crazy big goals and make them happen. You will not be asked to recite them, but your examples should show them. A story about simplifying a confusing process for users maps to "Make complex things simple"; a story about coaching a junior colleague maps to "Empower others".
How should you prepare for a Canva interview?
Canva's own preparation tips are: be yourself, don't overthink it, do your prep (its careers site, social channels, press coverage and the LinkedIn profiles of the people you will meet), have your questions ready, and come with tangible examples. For behavioural answers, Canva recommends the STARR method: Situation, Task, Action, Results and Reflection. The extra R is the part most candidates skip, so build it in: finish each story with what you learned or would do differently.
A practical plan:
- Map six stories to the four pillars. Two for Craft, and one or two each for Strategy, Communication and Leadership. Write them with the free STAR story builder and add a reflection line to each.
- Use the product properly. Spend an hour in Canva on a real task related to your role, and note one thing you would improve and why.
- Prepare for the take-home challenge. Canva says this step is about showing how you work and your thinking. Present your process, the trade-offs and what you would do with more time, not just the final output. Our guide to take-home assignment interviews covers how to scope and present one.
- Rehearse the final-round presentation. Time it, leave room for questions, and practise answering challenges to your choices calmly.
- Prepare your questions. Canva suggests asking about culture, the team, the role and hybrid ways of working. See our list of questions to ask the interviewer.
Engineers should prepare for technical problem solving across the peer interview and the 3-hour final, and for questions about past projects. Our Atlassian interview process guide covers another Sydney tech employer with a published process, if you are applying to both.
Can you use AI in a Canva interview?
Canva answers this directly on its hiring page. For engineering roles, Canva says it is evolving how it assesses AI skills through interactive, real-time challenges, and your recruiter will explain what to expect. For all other roles, Canva says it encourages candidates to use AI at every stage of the hiring process, but to be ready to explain how they used it (what they kept, changed or built on), especially in interviews or the Canva Challenge, and to expect questions about their experience with AI. Canva also says interviews may be recorded and transcribed using AI, and that opting out will not affect your application.
The rules therefore differ by role. Follow the employer's rules for your specific process and ask your recruiter if anything is unclear. Whatever the policy, Canva says it is looking for your original thinking and problem-solving skills, so the safest preparation is rehearsing your own answers until they are fluent.
Practice questions for a Canva interview (written by us)
These are practice questions we wrote around Canva's published framework and values. They are not questions reported from Canva interviews.
- Craft: "Tell me about the piece of work you are proudest of. What made it good, and how did you know?"
- Strategy: "Describe a time you chose a simpler approach over a more impressive one. What was the trade-off?"
- Communication: "Tell me about a time you had to get two teams aligned on a decision they disagreed about."
- Leadership and coaching: "Give an example of when you helped someone else succeed at something you could have done faster yourself."
- Make complex things simple: "Walk me through how you would explain a confusing feature to a first-time user."
- Set crazy big goals: "Tell me about an ambitious goal you set. Did you hit it, and what did you learn?"
- Motivation: "Why Canva, and why this team?" (See how to answer "why do you want to work here?".)
Example answer we wrote (Leadership and coaching, STARR):
"A new analyst joined my team just before our quarterly report (situation). I was asked to have the report ready in two weeks, and doing it myself would have been quicker (task). Instead I split the report so she owned one section, paired with her for the first two days and reviewed her draft early (action). We delivered on time, and she ran that section alone the next quarter (result). The reflection for me was that the extra two days of coaching paid back within a single cycle, so I now plan onboarding time into deadlines from the start (reflection)."
Interviewing at Canva in Australia
Canva's careers site says its company HQ and flagship campus is in Surry Hills, Sydney, that it also has a campus in Melbourne and co-working hubs in Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth, and that over half of all Canvanauts globally are located in Australia. It lists hubs in 8 countries in total. If you are interviewing for a Sydney role, the usual Australian norms apply: a two-page resume with referees available, behavioural questions, and salary discussed as "base plus super". Our guides to job interview tips for Australia, behavioural interview questions for Australia, the Australian resume and salary expectations in Australia cover each of these.
To practise out loud, CoPilot Interview's free browser AI mock interview needs nothing installed. The desktop app's Mock Interview (Windows and macOS) builds questions from your resume and the job description, reads each question aloud and scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to fix and a model answer, then gives you a report card. The free plan includes 15 minutes a day, with no account needed. For more on structuring behavioural answers, see our behavioural interview help page.
