Brainteaser Interview Questions: How to Practice Them With an AI Interview Assistant

Brainteaser interview questions test how you reason out loud under mild pressure, not whether you know the trick. Interviewers score the path: did you restate the problem, name your assumptions, break it into parts and check the result, or did you go quiet and guess.

Brainteaser interview questions test how you reason out loud under mild pressure, not whether you know the trick. Interviewers score the path: did you restate the problem, name your assumptions, break it into parts and check the result, or did you go quiet and guess. A clearly narrated wrong answer usually beats a blurted right one.

Below: a method for any brainteaser, six classics with the reasoning written out, what not to say, and how to rehearse them aloud with an AI interview assistant so you narrate instead of freeze.

A method for any brainteaser

  1. Restate it in your own words. Ten seconds that catch misreadings.
  2. Ask one or two clarifying questions. Is the scale balanced? Clarifying questions are part of the answer, not a stall.
  3. Simplify. Solve a smaller version first: two floors instead of 100.
  4. Name the structure aloud. A search, a count, an estimate.
  5. Work it audibly, each step and each number, so the interviewer can follow and nudge.
  6. Sanity check, then commit, with a confidence level.

One rule covers every step: never let more than about ten seconds pass in silence. If you are stuck, say what you are stuck on.

Six classic brainteaser interview questions, with the reasoning

QuestionKey moveReasoning
Why are manhole covers round?Reason from constraintsA circle cannot fall through its own hole at any angle, one worker can roll it, and it needs no alignment. A square fails the first test on the diagonal.
Two eggs, 100 floors: fewest drops to find the breaking floor?Shrinking stepsDrop the first egg at 14, then 27, 39, 50, 60, 69, 77, 84, 90, 95, 99; after it breaks, step up one floor at a time. Worst case 14 drops: 14 + 13 + ... + 1 = 105.
Two ropes each burn in 60 minutes, unevenly. Measure 45 minutes.Burn from both endsLight A at both ends and B at one end. A finishes at 30 minutes; light B's other end; it finishes 15 minutes later. Total 45.
Eight balls, one heavier, a balance scale, two weighings.Split into three groupsWeigh 3 against 3. Balanced: weigh the remaining 2. Not balanced: from the heavy 3, weigh 1 against 1; the heavy one, or the one left out, is it.
Angle between the clock hands at 3:15?The hour hand moves tooThe minute hand is at 90 degrees; the hour hand is a quarter of the way from 3 to 4, at 97.5. The angle is 7.5 degrees.
How many golf balls fit in a school bus?Volume ratio, then a packing factorAbout 40 cubic meters of bus; about 40 cubic centimeters per ball; so 1,000,000 by volume. Take 60 percent for packing and seats: around 600,000.

None of these needs more than arithmetic. Estimation questions, which have largely replaced riddles at big tech companies, get their own guide, and the quant interview prep guide covers the probability puzzles trading firms add on top.

What not to say

A practice routine that trains the narration

Brainteasers are a speaking skill as much as a thinking skill, so practice them aloud. Our guide to thinking out loud applies directly.

  1. Three sessions a week, 15 minutes each. Start an AI mock interview with the technical mix and a job description that mentions problem-solving or case rounds; the interviewer builds questions from it and your resume, reads each aloud and scores your spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. For pure riddles, read one from the table aloud and answer it the same way, timed.
  2. Record one answer per session and count the seconds of silence. Target: none longer than ten.
  3. Write down the structure, not the answer, and reuse it on a new puzzle next time.

The mock interviews are included on the free plan ($0, no credit card, 15 minutes a day).

Live help in a brainteaser round: what it can and cannot do

A live assistant that hears the question through your computer's audio can return a structured approach in about 2 seconds. It cannot do the narrating, and the narrating is what is scored, so at best it reminds you of a structure you should already own.

More important, most firms that ask brainteasers treat them as assessments and forbid outside help during them. Ask the recruiter in writing what is permitted, and follow your employer's rules.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is a desktop AI interview assistant with two halves. The practice half is the AI mock interview: paste the job description and your resume, choose the level and the mix, answer aloud, get each answer scored out of 10. The live half captions each question and drafts a structured answer, only for interviews where it is permitted. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Do companies still ask brainteaser interview questions?

Fewer than a decade ago. Most large tech companies replaced puzzles with role-specific problems and estimation questions, but trading firms, some consultancies and some startups still use them, usually in a first-round screen. Ask the recruiter what the round covers.

What if I already know the answer?

Say so, then work it through aloud anyway: “I've seen a version of this; let me show you the reasoning.” Interviewers score the path, and a recited answer gives them nothing to score.

Is it better to be fast or to be right?

Clear beats both. A structured path to a slightly wrong number beats a fast guess, because the interviewer can see where to nudge you. Commit to an answer at the end and say how confident you are.

Can I use an AI interview assistant during a brainteaser round?

Only if the company permits it, and most that ask brainteasers do not, since they treat the round as an assessment. Ask in writing and follow your employer's rules. Where it is allowed, the assistant can offer a structure, but you still have to narrate it.
