Most AT&T candidates describe an online application, an online assessment, a virtual or in-person interview with a manager, and then a conditional offer. Retail sales consultant candidates often get a sales role-play, while customer service and technician candidates hear more about problem solving, safety and schedules. Steps vary by role, location, country and team.

Below: what each step of the AT&T interview process checks, questions with sample answers, and a week-long plan. Our telecom employer interview guide compares AT&T with other carriers.

The AT&T interview process from application to offer

  1. Application on AT&T's careers site, with questions about schedule and location.
  2. Online assessment, commonly a work-style questionnaire with customer scenarios, for many retail and call center roles.
  3. Scheduling or screening contact from a recruiter; some candidates describe a short screening call.
  4. Interview with a manager, often by video, with behavioral questions and, for sales roles, a role-play.
  5. Conditional offer, followed by a background check and onboarding.

Roles AT&T commonly hires for

Retail sales consultants work in AT&T stores, helping customers with wireless service, devices and home internet. Customer service representatives handle billing and account questions in call centers or, where the posting says so, from home. Technicians install and repair service at homes and businesses.

As with other carriers, some stores with AT&T signs are run by authorized retailers that hire separately. Check which company the posting names before you prepare, because their interview steps can differ.

AT&T interview questions to practice

Commonly reported questions: tell me about yourself, why AT&T, a time you went above and beyond, how would you sell this to me, and how you handle rejection. Three sample answers:

“How would you sell me a new phone?” “Before naming any phone, I'd ask what you use yours for most, what frustrates you about it, and what you pay now. Say it's photos and a dying battery: I'd show you one model with a strong camera and battery, explain the monthly cost including any trade-in, and let you hold it. If you want to think about it, I'd write down the details for you.”

“Tell me about a time you went above and beyond.” “At a bank's call center, a caller's card was blocked while she was traveling. My job was to unblock it, but I noticed her phone number on file was out of date, which was why the fraud text never reached her. I updated it with her and explained what would happen next time. It prevented a second call.”

“How do you handle hearing no all day?” “I treat no as information. When customers turned down a home internet bundle at my last job, I'd ask one question about why, then make sure the rest of their visit was easy. Many came back weeks later. I check my own numbers at the end of each week so one bad day doesn't shake me.”

Seven days to an AT&T-ready interview

Days 1 and 2: Study the posting and AT&T's careers site. Write down the duties and the employer's name.

Days 3 and 4: Practice the sales role-play twice a day with a friend. For customer service roles, use our mock call guide instead.

Day 5: Practice staying calm on a timer: answer five prompts from our customer service interview questions in under two minutes each.

Day 6: Record a full mock interview and listen back for filler words.

Day 7: Confirm your availability and prepare two questions, for example how training works for new consultants.

Frequently asked questions

What is the AT&T assessment test like?

Candidates commonly describe an online questionnaire about how you work plus customer scenarios where you choose the best response. The exact content depends on the role. Take it in a quiet place, read each scenario fully and answer consistently rather than guessing what they want to hear.

How long does it take to hear back from AT&T after an interview?

It varies by role and location. Some candidates hear within days, others wait a few weeks, especially when background checks or training start dates are involved. A polite follow-up email to your recruiter after about a week is reasonable if you have not heard anything.

What should I wear to an AT&T retail interview?

Business casual is a safe choice for most store interviews, even on video: a clean collared shirt or blouse and neat grooming. If the recruiter gives dress guidance, follow it. Looking ready to greet customers helps the interviewer picture you on the sales floor.

Is an AT&T authorized retailer job the same as working for AT&T?

No. Authorized retailers are separate companies that sell AT&T service in their own stores. They run their own hiring, so the interview steps, pay and policies can differ. Check the employer named on the job posting before you prepare for the interview.
