AI Interview Questions for Automation Testing Roles: What QA Interviewers Now Ask

Automation testing interviews now include a layer of AI questions on top of the usual framework and coding ones: how you use AI tools to generate test cases without trusting them blindly, how you test features that are themselves AI-driven, how you use models to triage flaky tests and logs, and where you draw the line on what AI output goes into a release. Below are twenty such questions with answer outlines, followed by a practice plan.

The classic QA question set is in QA engineer interview questions, and the broader question of AI in your work is covered in how do you use AI at work.

Using AI in your testing work

  1. How do you use AI to generate test cases? From requirements or user stories, as a first draft; review for coverage gaps and invented behaviour; keep the human as the oracle.
  2. How do you verify AI-generated test code? Run it, read it, check assertions actually assert, check it fails when it should.
  3. Where has AI saved you time in testing? Boilerplate, data generation, log summarisation, converting manual steps to scripts; give one example with a number.
  4. Where has it misled you? An honest example: a plausible test that tested nothing, or a hallucinated API.
  5. How do you generate test data with AI safely? Synthetic data with the right shape, never production personal data in prompts.
  6. How do you use AI to triage flaky tests? Clustering failures by log signature, suggesting likely causes; the engineer confirms.
  7. How do you keep AI tools from leaking code or data? Approved tools, policy, no secrets in prompts, enterprise settings.
  8. Would you let AI auto-fix a failing test? Only with review; a passing test is not the goal, a correct one is.

Testing AI-driven features

  1. How do you test a feature whose output is non-deterministic? Property-based assertions, tolerance ranges, golden sets with semantic comparison, repeated runs.
  2. How do you test a chatbot or an LLM feature? A curated prompt set, expected-behaviour rubrics, safety and refusal cases, regression on prompt changes.
  3. What is an evaluation set and how do you build one? Representative inputs with expected outputs or grading criteria, grown from real failures.
  4. How do you test for bias or harmful output? Targeted adversarial cases, demographic variations, review of refusals and tone.
  5. How do you handle model updates? Treat them as releases: rerun the evaluation set, compare, gate on thresholds.
  6. How do you test retrieval-augmented features? Separately test retrieval quality and answer faithfulness to the retrieved text.

Judgment and process

  1. What should never be automated away in QA? Exploratory testing, risk judgment, deciding what matters to the user.
  2. How do you explain AI-assisted testing to a sceptical manager? Show where it saved time, where you caught its mistakes, and the review step.
  3. How do you measure whether AI helped? Defect escape rate, time to write and maintain tests, flaky-test counts before and after.
  4. How do you stay current? Named tools and sources, and something you tried last month.
  5. Describe your framework and CI setup. The classic answer, with where AI fits in it.
  6. Live task: write a test for this function with and without an AI assistant. Narrate what you asked, what you checked, what you changed; see AI-assisted coding interviews.

A practice plan

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose free AI mock interview can be given a QA automation posting and these questions as context; it asks them aloud, scores each spoken answer out of ten and shows a model answer, and Coding mode helps you drill the live test-writing task. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. In live coding rounds, follow your employer's rules and the platform's terms on AI assistance.

Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What AI questions come up in automation testing interviews?

Using AI to generate and verify test cases and data, triaging flaky tests, testing non-deterministic and LLM-driven features, building evaluation sets, handling model updates, and judgment about what not to automate.

How do you test a non-deterministic AI feature?

With property-based assertions, tolerance ranges, golden sets compared semantically, repeated runs and a curated evaluation set that gates releases.

Should I admit AI tools have misled me in testing?

Yes, with a specific example and what you now check. It is the answer that shows judgment.

Is there a live task?

Often: writing a test for a function, sometimes with an AI assistant allowed. Narrate what you asked, checked and changed.

Practice this interview before the real one

The AI mock interview builds questions from your resume and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10. Included on the free plan.
