Nursing school interviews are admissions interviews, not job interviews: they test motivation, ethics, empathy, resilience and communication rather than clinical skill, and many programs run them as multiple mini-interviews (MMI) where you rotate through timed stations with a scenario at each. AI is useful here in exactly one way, as a practice partner that asks the questions, times you and scores your spoken answers, and it has clear limits, because the scenarios reward judgment and warmth that a model can prompt but not supply. This page covers the common questions, the MMI format, how to practice with AI, and what to prepare that no tool can do for you.
Questions programs ask
| Question | What they are assessing | Answer shape |
|---|---|---|
| Why nursing, and why now? | Motivation and realism | A specific experience, what it showed you, why this program; see why healthcare |
| Tell me about a time you cared for someone | Empathy in practice | One story with what you noticed and did |
| How do you handle stress and failure? | Resilience | A real setback, what you changed |
| A patient refuses care. What do you do? | Ethics, autonomy | Respect, understand, inform, escalate appropriately |
| What do you know about the nursing shortage / scope of practice? | Awareness | Two facts, one implication for you |
| How do you work in a team under pressure? | Collaboration | Example from work, sport or study |
Questions asked of working nurses overlap and are collected in nursing interview questions.
The MMI format
In a multiple mini-interview you read a prompt outside a door for a minute or two, enter, and discuss it with an assessor for five to eight minutes, then move to the next station. Stations include ethical dilemmas, role-plays with an actor, teamwork tasks and standard questions. Scoring is per station by different assessors, so a weak station does not sink you and a strong one does not carry you. The skill is thinking aloud in a structured way under time pressure, which is the same skill tested in residency interviews and, more gently, in college admissions interviews.
Practicing with AI
- Run a mock interview with the program's values and the questions above as the brief; answer aloud with a timer.
- For MMI practice, paste a scenario, give yourself two minutes to read, then speak for six; read the score and the model answer for structure, not for content.
- Record and listen for warmth: pace, pauses, whether you acknowledged the person in the scenario before the procedure.
- Repeat the ethics scenarios most; they are where structure helps and where candidates ramble.
- Stop two days before the interview and rehearse with a person for the final run.
What no tool can do
- Give you a reason for wanting to nurse. The admissions panel can tell a borrowed one.
- Provide the experiences you will describe; if you lack them, volunteer or shadow before applying rather than inventing.
- Handle a role-play with an actor; practice those with a friend.
- Be used during the interview: admissions interviews are in person or live on video with assessors watching, and no program permits assistance.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose free AI mock interview works as the practice partner above: it builds questions from a brief you give it, reads them aloud, scores each spoken answer out of ten and shows a model answer. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. For an admissions interview the only honest use is practice; bring your own reasons and experiences, and follow your employer's rules and the program's instructions on the day.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What questions are asked in a nursing school interview?
Why nursing and why now, a time you cared for someone, handling stress and failure, ethical scenarios such as a patient refusing care, awareness of the profession, and teamwork under pressure.
What is an MMI nursing interview?
Multiple mini-interviews: timed stations with a scenario each, assessed by different people, including ethical dilemmas, role-plays and standard questions.
Can AI help me prepare for a nursing school interview?
As a practice partner: it asks the questions, times you and scores spoken answers for structure. It cannot supply your motivation, your experiences or warmth in a role-play.
Can I use an AI assistant during the interview?
No. Admissions interviews are live with assessors present and no program permits assistance. Practice beforehand.
How should I practice ethics scenarios?
Read for two minutes, speak for six, structure as respect, understand, inform, escalate; repeat them more than any other station type.
Practice this interview before the real one
The AI mock interview builds questions from your resume and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10. Included on the free plan.
