In France an AI interview assistant meets two kinds of interview: the French-language rounds that most employers run, from the HR screen to the manager interview, which the app supports because French is one of its ten languages, and the English rounds at international firms, consultancies and startups in Paris, Lyon and Toulouse, where an English check is often a round of its own. The setup is the same as in Germany and the UK; the contract vocabulary, the formality and the norms below are what differ. This page covers where the interviews are and what format they take, the language question, local interview norms worth knowing, the setup that works on local connections, and the rules to follow before using any assistance live.
Where the hiring is in France
| Sector | Typical employers | Interview format |
|---|---|---|
| Technology and startups | Paris startups and scale-ups, software firms in Lyon, Nantes and Toulouse | Video screen, technical test or case, team interview; English common |
| Luxury, retail and consumer goods | Luxury houses and consumer brands headquartered in and around Paris | HR screen, manager interviews, sometimes a case; French, with English for international roles |
| Aerospace and engineering | Aircraft, space and supplier companies in Toulouse and Bordeaux | Technical interview and HR interview, often a panel; English for international programmes |
| Consulting and finance | Strategy and IT consultancies, banks and insurers around La Défense | Case interviews, fit interviews, an English assessment |
| Large groups and utilities | Energy, transport, telecom and infrastructure groups | Structured interviews, sometimes a jury and written tests |
| Remote roles abroad | UK, Swiss, German and US employers hiring in French time zones | Video interviews in English, take-home tasks |
Language and format
Most French employers interview in French; international firms, consultancies and startups interview in English for technical and client-facing roles, and a bilingual process with a French HR screen followed by an English manager round is common. The app transcribes French and English among its ten languages, so set it to the language of each round rather than leaving it to guess; answers that switch between the two mid-sentence transcribe less reliably at the switch points. If English is your weaker side, interview tips for non-native English speakers covers the habits that matter most, and AI interview assistants in other languages explains how to practice in each language with the mock interview.
Interview norms in France
- Use vous and surnames until invited otherwise; startups and tech teams move to tu and first names quickly, large groups do not.
- A lettre de motivation is still expected at many employers alongside a one- or two-page CV, and interviewers may ask about it.
- Contract type shapes the conversation: CDI (permanent) versus CDD (fixed-term) versus freelance, with questions about your notice period (préavis) and the trial period (période d'essai).
- Salary is discussed as annual gross in euros (brut annuel), sometimes spread over 13 months; ask which basis the figure uses.
- Processes often run to three or four rounds that repeat the same questions; expect why France and why this company if you are coming from abroad.
- France uses Central European Time with daylight saving; hiring slows sharply in August and over the Christmas holidays.
Setup on local connections
- Fibre is widespread in the main cities; a wired connection is still the safest choice for a panel or a case round.
- Install the desktop app on Windows or macOS, run the free mock interview once in French and once in English, and read both transcripts for the words it misheard.
- Set the app's language per round: French for the HR screen, English for the technical or client interview.
- Use headphones, and test audio in the platform the employer uses; Teams is common in large groups, Google Meet in startups.
- Prepare your answers on contract type, notice period and salary basis in both languages, since they come up in every process.
- Keep answers to about ninety seconds; French interviewers interrupt less than American ones, so you have to stop yourself.
Rules first
Three rules apply everywhere, including France. Proctored and AI-led rounds forbid outside help, and the invitation says so; practice for them instead. In a live conversation with a human, the employer's policy decides, and when nothing has been said it is your judgment and your risk. Rules on AI in hiring are being phased in across the EU and apply mainly to employers, not to candidates; the employer's own policy and the invitation are what govern you. Whatever you decide, follow your employer's rules and the instructions in the invitation.

Frequently asked questions
Does the app work in French?
Yes. French is one of the ten languages it transcribes and answers in, and the mock interview can run entirely in French.
Can I use an AI interview assistant in a French job interview?
For practice, always. Live, proctored and AI-led rounds forbid it; in a human conversation the employer's policy decides, and when nothing has been said it is your judgment and your risk.
Is pricing in euros?
Pricing is in US dollars. The free plan and the browser demo cost nothing, and most French users start there.
What is different about French interviews?
Formality, the motivation letter, questions about contract type and notice period, salary stated as annual gross, and processes with several rounds that repeat the same questions.
Practice this interview before the real one
