AI Interview Assistant for Physical and Occupational Therapists

An AI interview assistant helps physical and occupational therapists rehearse the part of the interview that decides it: clinical reasoning spoken out loud. PT and OT interviews ask you to walk through an evaluation, explain why a patient stalled, describe how you document medical necessity and tell a patient story from the setting you are applying to.

A mock interviewer that asks those physical therapist interview questions aloud and scores your answers turns a vague sense of readiness into specific fixes.

The caveat is the same as for any clinician. The tool is a structure coach, not a clinical reference; verify any technique, contraindication or billing rule against your training and the setting's policies.

Rounds, and how they differ by setting

Most therapy hiring is short: a recruiter call, an interview with the clinic director or rehab manager, and in many outpatient clinics a working interview or shadow half-day where you treat or observe alongside the team. Acute and inpatient rehab roles tend to use a panel with the rehab manager and a senior therapist. School-based roles add the special education director.

SettingWhat interviewers probe hardestA story to bring
Outpatient orthopedicsCaseload volume, point-of-service documentation, patient retentionA plateaued patient you got moving again
Acute careSafety, discharge recommendations, working with nurses and physiciansA discharge disagreement you resolved
Inpatient rehab and skilled nursingGoal writing, team conferences, family communicationA family meeting with a hard message
Home healthIndependence, safety assessment, time managementAn unsafe home you adapted the plan for
School-basedIEP goals, educational relevance, collaboration with teachersA goal you rewrote to fit the classroom

Physical therapist interview questions, with answer outlines

OT interviews use the same shapes with occupation-based framing. Each outline is a backbone; put your own case on it and strip identifying details.

  1. A patient is not progressing toward their goals. What do you do? Reassess, check adherence and barriers at home, adjust the plan or goals, communicate with the referring provider, document the change.
  2. How do you meet productivity expectations without cutting corners? Plan the day, document at point of service, group where appropriate, and name the things you will not compromise.
  3. Walk me through an evaluation for a diagnosis common in this setting. Subjective history, the objective measures you choose and why, functional goals, plan; stay inside your training.
  4. A patient refuses treatment. Explore the reason, educate, respect autonomy, document, and tell the team.
  5. How do you document to support medical necessity? Measurable functional goals, each intervention tied to a deficit, progress notes that show change or a reason for the plateau.
  6. Describe how you work with a PTA or COTA. Delegation within scope, the supervision your state requires, how you hand off and check in.
  7. A family member disagrees with your discharge recommendation. Listen, explain the functional findings, involve case management, keep safety as the anchor.
  8. How do you manage a large or mixed caseload? Prioritize by risk and goals, schedule in blocks, ask for help before quality slips.
  9. Tell me about a disagreement with a physician or nurse. Data first, respectful tone, the escalation path you used.
  10. Why this setting? One real reason tied to the patients, not the hours.

A practice plan with the AI mock interview

Paste the posting and your resume into the AI mock interview, pick a behavioral mix, and it asks questions built from both, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer. It is on the free plan.

Where live help applies, and what to verify yourself

Live help fits one step: a video interview on Zoom, Teams or Meet where the employer allows it. The desktop window captions the question and drafts a structured answer in about two seconds, useful when a manager bundles caseload, documentation and productivity into one question. Working interviews and in-person panels are practice-only.

Verify anything clinical yourself: a contraindication, an outcome measure's cutoff, a supervision ratio, a billing rule. Models get these wrong with confidence. Health systems increasingly have policies on AI tools in hiring, so check them, answer honestly if asked and follow your employer's rules.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is a desktop AI interview assistant for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12 and later. For therapists the mock interview is the useful part, and it is free; the free plan also includes 15 minutes of live help a day for video screens where permitted. Our healthcare interviews comparison covers how other tools handle clinical roles. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in a physical therapist interview?

Expect a plateaued-patient scenario, a walk-through of an evaluation, documentation for medical necessity, productivity expectations, a treatment refusal, working with assistants, a discharge disagreement and why you want this setting. Acute roles add safety and discharge planning; school roles add IEP goals.

How should an OT prepare differently from a PT?

Frame every story around occupation and participation: the task the person needed to do, the barrier, the adaptation or training, and the functional result. Expect questions on activities of daily living, cognition or sensory needs depending on the setting, and on IEP goals for school roles.

Can an AI interview assistant help with a working interview?

Only beforehand. A working interview happens in the clinic, so rehearse how you introduce yourself, explain a plan in plain language and ask a supervisor for input. The spoken practice transfers; the tool itself stays at home.

Is it acceptable to use AI during a therapy job interview?

For preparation, yes. For live use on a video call, only where the employer permits it, and say so if asked. Keep clinical statements your own; check any technique, contraindication or billing rule the tool suggests against your training before you ever say it.
