An internal transfer interview is strange in both directions: you know the company better than any outside candidate, but the interviewer may know your record only through your current manager, and anything you say about why you are leaving your team will travel. An AI interview assistant helps you rehearse the two hard questions, why you want to move and what you bring that the new team cannot see, and it helps you keep your story consistent with what is already on file. This page covers how internal interviews differ, the questions, the politics of using any tool, and a preparation routine.
How internal interviews differ
| External interview | Internal transfer interview |
|---|---|
| Interviewer knows nothing about you | Interviewer may have heard a version of you already |
| Why are you leaving your company? | Why are you leaving your team, and does your manager know? |
| Culture fit is a question | Culture fit is assumed; team fit is the question |
| Your record is what you say it is | Your record is in the system and can be checked |
| Rejection is private | Rejection is known to your manager and sometimes your team |
The promotion version of this interview has its own dynamics, covered in AI interview assistants for promotion interviews.
The two hard questions
- Why do you want to leave your current team? Forward-looking, specific and free of complaint. The structure in why are you leaving your current job applies, with the extra rule that your current manager may read the notes.
- What are you looking for in the new role? Concrete and matched to the team's work, which you can research better than any outsider; see what are you looking for in your next role.
- Plus the one they rarely ask directly: have you told your manager? Know the company's internal-mobility policy and follow it; a transfer discovered by surprise poisons both relationships.
Using an assistant inside your own company
Two considerations outsiders do not have. First, your company's policy on AI tools applies with double force in an internal interview: using a live assistant against a stated policy, in a meeting with colleagues, is a career risk out of proportion to any benefit. Second, your answers will be compared with your performance reviews, your project history and what your manager says; rehearsed answers that drift from the record are easy to catch. The honest use is preparation: run a mock interview built from the internal posting, practice the two hard questions until they are calm and consistent, and walk in without the tool. Scheduling the conversation discreetly is covered in interviewing on a lunch break while employed.
A preparation routine
- Read the internal posting and talk to someone on the team before the interview; outsiders cannot do this and you can.
- Write your reason for moving in two sentences a reasonable manager could read without offence.
- List three contributions from your current role with numbers, and check them against your last review.
- Run a mock interview from the posting and answer aloud; rewrite anything that sounded like a complaint.
- Tell your manager according to the policy, before the interview if that is the rule.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant whose free AI mock interview builds questions from your résumé and the internal posting, reads them aloud, scores each spoken answer out of ten and shows a model answer, which is the right tool for the two hard questions above. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. In the interview itself, your company's policy on AI tools applies, so follow your employer's rules and leave the assistant closed.
Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
How is an internal transfer interview different?
The interviewer may already have a version of you, your record can be checked, the why-are-you-leaving question is about your team and your manager, and rejection is not private.
Should I tell my manager before an internal interview?
Follow the company's internal-mobility policy; most require or strongly expect it. A transfer discovered by surprise damages both relationships.
Can I use an AI interview assistant in an internal interview?
Use it to prepare. Using a live assistant against company policy in a meeting with colleagues is a disproportionate risk.
How do I explain why I want to leave my team?
Forward-looking and specific, about the work you want, with nothing that reads as a complaint if your manager sees the notes.
