AI Interview Assistant for FaceTime and WhatsApp Video Interviews

Yes: an AI interview assistant works with FaceTime and WhatsApp video interviews whenever the call plays through a computer, which means FaceTime on a Mac or WhatsApp Desktop on Windows or macOS. The assistant listens to the computer's audio output for the interviewer and to your microphone for you, so it does not care which app is producing the sound, and it never joins the call.

The exception is a call that stays on your phone: there is no computer audio to capture, so practice beforehand or take the call on speaker next to the laptop and accept lower accuracy.

Why FaceTime and WhatsApp behave like Zoom here

A desktop AI interview assistant does not plug into the meeting app. It captures whatever the computer plays, so a FaceTime call on a Mac or a WhatsApp Desktop call on Windows looks identical to a Zoom call from the assistant's point of view. It is not a participant, it adds no bot to the call, and nothing is sent to the other side.

Small-company and overseas recruiters who skip Zoom and simply send a WhatsApp number are therefore not a special case.

Setup on a Mac for FaceTime or WhatsApp Desktop

  1. Download CoPilot Interview for macOS 12 or later, unzip it and run it. Grant the microphone and screen recording permissions when macOS asks; the screen recording permission is what lets the app hear the computer's audio.
  2. Wear wired headphones; with speakers, your own voice bleeds into the output stream and can be captioned as the interviewer's.
  3. Open FaceTime or WhatsApp Desktop and make sure its output device is the same one the rest of the Mac uses.
  4. Start a test call with a friend, or play a video with speech, and confirm captions appear and an answer follows in about 2 seconds.

The Mac setup guide covers the permission prompts in detail.

Setup on Windows for WhatsApp Desktop

FaceTime has no Windows app, so on a PC this is a WhatsApp Desktop question. Install WhatsApp from the Microsoft Store, link it to your phone, and answer the call on the desktop app.

Install CoPilot Interview 1.3.17 either from the Microsoft Store, which installs in one click and shows no SmartScreen step, or as the direct .exe, which shows the standard SmartScreen "more info" step on first run. Check that Windows and WhatsApp use the same output device, wear headphones, and run the same test call before the real one.

When the interview is on your phone

Many WhatsApp interviews never leave the phone: the recruiter calls the number on your resume and that is that. You then have three options, and only the first two give live help.

OptionWhat the assistant hearsAccuracy
Move the call to WhatsApp Desktop or FaceTime on the computerClean computer audioSame as a Zoom interview
Phone on speaker beside the laptopRoom audio through the laptop mic, including your voiceLower: misses soft speech, may caption your own words
Practice before the call onlyNothing during the callNot applicable; you answer from preparation

The speaker setup is imperfect: the laptop microphone hears the recruiter and you through one channel, so some of your own sentences will show up as questions and a quiet recruiter may be missed. Read our phone interview guide before relying on it; a two-device setup, with the call on the phone and the assistant on the laptop, is the usual compromise.

What to expect during the call

Once audio is flowing, the experience matches any other meeting app. Each question is captioned live, and a structured answer appears in about 2 seconds. Auto-answer is on by default and treats a 20-second pause as the end of a question, so let the interviewer finish before you glance at the window. The shorter, longer and redo controls adjust the answer, and Ctrl+Shift+A (Cmd on a Mac) asks for one on demand.

Two limits to know. After 10 minutes without voice the app pauses listening; Ctrl+Shift+L resumes it. And a Free session runs up to 15 minutes, with 15 minutes of live help a day, so a 45-minute interview needs Standard, Pro or a one-hour pack. Neither the iPhone nor the Android companion can capture a phone call's audio; see the mobile app guide.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

Our AI interview assistant is a desktop app for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12 and later. It listens to the computer's audio output and your microphone, which is why FaceTime on a Mac and WhatsApp Desktop on either platform work without extra setup. Audio is streamed in short segments for transcription and is not stored on our servers; a text transcript is saved only in your Documents folder.

Start with the AI mock interview on the free plan. Use live help only where it is allowed, and follow your employer's rules on interview assistance. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI interview assistant work with WhatsApp video calls?

Yes, when the call runs in WhatsApp Desktop on Windows or macOS, because the desktop app plays audio through the computer and the assistant captures that output. A call that stays on your phone cannot be captured directly; move it to the desktop app or use the assistant to practice beforehand.

Can I use an AI interview assistant with FaceTime?

On a Mac, yes. FaceTime plays through the Mac's audio output, which the assistant listens to once you grant microphone and screen recording permissions. FaceTime has no Windows app, and a FaceTime call taken on an iPhone cannot be captured by the desktop assistant.

Does the assistant join or appear in the FaceTime or WhatsApp call?

No. The assistant is a separate window on your computer, not a participant. It never joins the call, adds no bot and sends nothing to the other side; it only listens to the audio your computer plays and to your microphone. Follow your employer's rules on whether live assistance is permitted.

How accurate is the assistant if I put my phone on speaker next to the laptop?

Noticeably less accurate than a desktop call. The laptop microphone hears both the recruiter and you through one channel, so soft speech can be missed and some of your own sentences may be captioned as questions. Treat it as a backup and prepare as if it were not there.
