An AI interview assistant helps a business intelligence analyst prepare for the conversational half of a BI interview: explaining a dashboard you built, defending a metric definition, and telling the story of the number nobody trusted. As a mock interviewer it asks those from your resume and scores how clearly you answer out loud. The live SQL exercise is a different matter: it exists to show your unaided query skills, and we treat it as practice-only. Below are the business intelligence analyst interview questions we see most, with answer outlines, how to prepare for the SQL test, the rounds to expect and a practice plan.
Business intelligence analyst interview questions with answer outlines
- Walk me through a dashboard you built and who used it. The decision it served, the source tables, the model, refresh schedule, who opened it weekly, and one change it drove.
- A stakeholder says the revenue number on your dashboard is wrong. Reproduce it, reconcile to the system of record, check joins, filters, time zones and the metric definition, explain what you found, document the fix.
- How do you define a metric so finance and sales agree? A metric dictionary entry with an owner, the grain, the filters, the formula and a worked example, signed off by both teams.
- Find customers with no orders in the last 90 days. A left join with a null check or a not-exists subquery, with attention to the date boundary and time zone.
- Explain window functions with an example. A running total or a rank within a partition, and why they beat self-joins for readability and performance.
- Star schema or one wide table? Star for reuse, governance and BI tool performance; a wide table for a one-off analysis or a small team.
- A dashboard is slow. What do you do? Aggregate tables, reduce cardinality, fewer visuals per page, import or extract mode instead of live queries where freshness allows.
- How do you pick a chart? Match the question: trend over time is a line, comparison is a bar, part-to-whole with few categories is a stacked bar, and almost nothing is a pie.
- Tell me about a request you pushed back on. You asked what decision the dashboard would inform, discovered a single query answered it, and saved a build.
- How do you handle data quality upstream? Freshness and row-count tests, alerts, a clear owner in data engineering, and a visible last-updated stamp on every dashboard.
Preparing for the live SQL exercise
The SQL round is usually 30 to 60 minutes of shared-screen querying against a small schema, with the interviewer watching how you think. Narrate your plan before you type, and say what you would check if the result looks wrong.
- Drill joins, aggregation with filters on aggregates, window functions, date arithmetic and conditional aggregation; those five cover most exercises.
- Practice reading an unfamiliar schema and asking about grain and nulls.
- Write the query in steps with common table expressions so the interviewer can follow.
- Practice on your own with a clock; the exercise exists to show your unaided skill.
Tool-specific rounds have their own lists: see our Power BI interview questions and Tableau interview questions.
The rounds a BI interview usually has
| Round | What it tests | Prepare with |
|---|---|---|
| Recruiter screen | Tools, data volumes, stakeholder groups | A one-minute summary with two dashboards named |
| Hiring manager deep dive | Metric judgment and stakeholder stories | The wrong-revenue story and the pushback story |
| Live SQL exercise | Query skill under observation | Timed practice on your own |
| Dashboard review or take-home | Modeling, design, explanation | One dashboard you can defend decision by decision |
The data analyst guide covers the statistics and experimentation questions that analytics-heavy BI roles add.
A practice plan built on the AI mock interview
The AI mock interview builds questions from your pasted job description and resume, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10 with what worked, what to improve and a model answer; it is included on the free plan.
- Day 1: the dashboard walk-through, timed to three minutes, with the decision it drove stated first.
- Day 2: the wrong-number story and the metric-definition question.
- Day 3: narrated SQL: explain window functions and the 90-day query out loud without a keyboard.
- Day 4: a timed SQL exercise on your own against a public sample schema.
- Day 5: a full mixed round plus the slow-dashboard and chart-choice questions.
Live help and what to verify yourself
Where the employer allows it, live help fits the hiring manager and stakeholder rounds: the app captions the question and shows a structured answer about two seconds after it ends, which helps when a reconciliation question has six checks and you tend to stop at three. Follow your employer's rules; the SQL exercise and any take-home should be entirely your own work.
Verify yourself: SQL dialect differences (models mix syntax from different databases), tool version specifics, and every figure from your own dashboards.
Where CoPilot Interview fits
CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant for Windows and macOS, with a browser demo at /try that runs practice questions with no signup. The free plan is $0 with no credit card, includes the AI mock interview and gives 15 minutes of live help a day in sessions of up to 15 minutes. Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.
Frequently asked questions
What are common business intelligence analyst interview questions?
A dashboard walk-through, what you do when a stakeholder says a number is wrong, defining a metric both finance and sales accept, a SQL query, window functions, star schema versus a wide table, speeding up a slow dashboard, a request you pushed back on, and upstream data quality.
How do I answer the dashboard number is wrong question?
In order: reproduce the number, reconcile it to the system of record, check joins, filters, time zones and the metric definition, explain what you found in plain language, and document the fix.
What SQL should I practice for a BI interview?
Joins including left joins with null checks, aggregation with filters on aggregates, window functions such as running totals and ranks within partitions, date arithmetic across time zones, and conditional aggregation. Practice narrating your plan before typing.
Can I use an AI interview assistant during a SQL test?
No; the exercise exists to show your unaided query skills, and using tools the employer has not allowed would misrepresent them. Use the mock interview for the dashboard and stakeholder questions, and practice timed SQL on your own against a public sample schema.
