AI Interview Assistant and Laptop Battery Life: Plugged In, Power Modes and a Fallback

A video interview is one of the heaviest things a laptop does: the camera, the encoder, the screen at full brightness and a browser or meeting app working hard for an hour. An AI interview assistant adds a little to that, capturing audio and sending short segments to a server, and the combination on a laptop that is a few years old can turn a comfortable battery into a nervous one.

This page covers how much each part draws in general terms, why the answer is almost always to interview plugged in, the power settings that matter on Windows and macOS, how to get through an hour on battery when you have no choice, and the fallback when a laptop dies mid-call. No exact figures are claimed for the assistant; battery draw depends on the machine, and the test at the end is the only number that matters for yours.

What draws the power

ComponentDraw during an interviewWhat you can do
The video callThe largest share: camera, video encoding and decoding, the meeting appNothing you should change; it is the interview
Screen brightnessLarge on most laptopsLower it to the level where you still look well lit on camera
The AI assistantModest: audio capture and short network uploads; the model runs on a server, not your laptopClose other apps so it is the only extra
Background apps and browser tabsOften more than the assistantClose everything you do not need, including sync clients
Wi-Fi versus a hotspotA hotspot over Bluetooth or USB can be cheaper than weak Wi-FiA weak signal makes the radio work harder; sit near the router or use a cable
Fans at full speedA symptom of a hot, busy machineA cool, flat surface and fewer apps

In CoPilot Interview the transcription and the answers are produced on servers; the desktop app itself is listening, uploading short audio segments and drawing text, which is why its battery cost is modest and why a slow connection, rather than a slow laptop, is the usual cause of lag, as explained in do AI interview assistants add latency.

Plug it in

The honest advice is simple: interview on mains power, every time, with the charger connected before the call starts. A charger removes the battery question entirely, lets the laptop run at full performance without power-saving throttling, and means a long interview that overruns is not a crisis. If you are interviewing somewhere unusual, a car, a library, a hotel lobby, bring the charger and find the socket first; the setups in interviewing from your car all assume a power source, even if it is the car's. If the charger has failed or the socket is out of reach, the section below is for you, and it is a fallback, not a plan.

Power settings that matter

  1. Windows: set the power mode to best performance while plugged in, and to balanced on battery; the battery-saver mode throttles the processor and can make the meeting app stutter.
  2. macOS: turn off low power mode for the interview; it reduces performance in exactly the way you do not want on a call.
  3. Both: turn off automatic screen dimming and sleep for the duration, so the screen does not fade while an interviewer is talking.
  4. Both: disable automatic updates, backups and sync for the hour; they are the usual hidden drain.
  5. Both: close every app except the meeting app, the assistant and a browser tab with the job description.
  6. Keep the laptop on a hard, flat surface; a laptop on a bed runs hot and loud.

An hour on battery, if you must

If the laptop dies

Join from your phone immediately, using the meeting app and the link in your email, and say what happened in one sentence: 'my laptop has lost power; I am back on my phone.' Interviewers have seen it before. The assistant does not run on the phone in live mode, so the rest of the interview is yours alone, which is also fine; the structure is in your head from the practice. Afterwards, send a short note apologising for the interruption and offering to continue anything that was cut short. The routine for an assistant that stops while the laptop stays up is different and is in what to do if your AI interview assistant stops working.

Where CoPilot Interview fits

CoPilot Interview is an AI interview assistant for Windows 10 and 11 and macOS 12 or later whose live mode does its heavy work on servers rather than on your laptop, and whose free AI mock interview is the right way to measure battery draw on your own machine before it matters; the iPhone practice app via TestFlight and the Android APK beta are for practice, not live calls. The free plan gives 15 minutes a day of live help in sessions of up to 15 minutes, with AI mock interviews included. The product is built for practice; if you ever consider live help in a real interview, follow your employer's rules.

Disclosure: CoPilot Interview is our product, so weigh what we say about it accordingly.

Frequently asked questions

Does an AI interview assistant drain a laptop battery?

It adds a modest amount: audio capture and short uploads. The video call and the screen draw far more. Interview plugged in and the question disappears.

What power settings should I use for a video interview?

Best performance on Windows and low power mode off on macOS, automatic dimming and sleep disabled, updates and sync paused, and only the apps you need open.

Can I do an hour-long interview on battery?

Often, from full charge with brightness down and other apps closed. Test it with a thirty-minute mock interview on battery and read the percentage.

What if my laptop dies during the interview?

Rejoin from your phone with the meeting link, say what happened in one sentence, and finish without the assistant. Send a short note afterwards.

Does the app run on a phone during a live interview?

No. The iPhone and Android apps are for practice. Live mode is the desktop app on Windows and macOS.

Practice this interview before the real one

The AI mock interview builds questions from your resume and the job description, reads them aloud and scores each spoken answer out of 10. Included on the free plan.
