Account Executive Interview Questions and Answers

Account executive interviews test whether you can run a deal from discovery to close and whether your numbers are real: how you qualify, how you handle a champion who goes quiet, how you negotiate without discounting on reflex, and what your quota attainment actually was. Expect a mock discovery call or pitch, questions about your pipeline and forecasting, a lost deal, and why you are leaving.

The top-of-funnel questions are in sales development representative interview questions, the post-sale side in AI interview help for account managers, and the question every sales manager asks has a structure in how do you handle rejection in sales. This page gives 10 questions with what a strong answer contains, 3 sample answers you can adapt, a table of the rounds to expect, and a practice plan for the week before.

Account executive interview questions and what strong answers contain

  1. Walk me through a deal you closed from first touch to signature. Source, discovery, pain and impact, champion and economic buyer, evaluation, objections, negotiation, close; with numbers and dates.
  2. What were your quota and attainment for the last three years? Honest numbers with context; what drove the good and bad years.
  3. Mock discovery call: I am a prospect. Go. Open with their situation, ask about pain and impact, qualify budget, authority, timeline, next step; no pitch.
  4. Tell me about a deal you lost and why. The real reason, what you missed, what you do differently.
  5. How do you forecast, and how accurate are you? Stage criteria with exit evidence, commit versus best case, honest track record.
  6. A champion stops responding two weeks before close. What do you do? Multi-thread, find out what changed, give them a reason to re-engage, go above if appropriate.
  7. How do you handle a request for a thirty percent discount? Understand why, trade for something (term, timing, references), protect the value, walk if needed.
  8. How do you prioritise your pipeline? Qualification, deal size, timing, likelihood; time on deals that can close.
  9. Why are you leaving your current company? Honest, non-bitter, forward-looking.
  10. Why us? Product, market, the team, what you have learned about customers.

Sample answers

Mock discovery call: I am a prospect. Go.

Thanks for taking the call. Before I tell you anything about us, I would like to understand how you handle this today. Can you walk me through the current process and where it breaks? What does that cost you, in time, money or risk, when it breaks? Who else feels that pain? If you fixed it, what would be different by next quarter? Has this come up with your leadership, and is there budget attached, or would this be a new conversation? If we agreed there was a fit, what would the next step and the timeline look like on your side? Then, and only then, I would show the two things we do that map to what they said.

A champion stops responding two weeks before close. What do you do?

First I assume something changed on their side rather than that they are avoiding me: a reorganisation, a budget freeze, a competitor. I check whether I have other contacts in the account; if I do not, that is my mistake, and I use it to fix it, reaching the economic buyer or a user with a reason, a piece of value, not a check-in. I send my champion a short message that makes it easy to reply with bad news: has something changed on your side? If I hear nothing in a week I go above with a respectful note referencing the business case we built. Deals die quietly; I would rather know.

How do you handle a request for a thirty percent discount?

I ask what is behind the number: a competitor's quote, a budget cap, a procurement habit. Then I go back to the value we agreed in discovery and ask whether anything has changed about it. If a concession is needed to close, I trade rather than give: a longer term, an earlier start, a case study, a reference call. I will go to my manager with a specific ask tied to something we get. If the only way to win is a price that makes the deal unprofitable, I walk, politely, and I have had two of those come back within a year at close to list.

Mistakes to avoid

A practice plan for the week before

  1. Write your quota and attainment for three years with the one-line reason behind each.
  2. Rehearse a ten-minute discovery call aloud, questions only.
  3. Prepare a closed-deal walk-through with numbers and dates, and a lost deal with the real reason.
  4. Run a mock interview from the posting and answer the champion-gone-quiet and discount questions aloud.
  5. Prepare questions about territory, lead flow, team attainment, ramp, comp plan and the product roadmap.

Frequently asked questions

What questions are asked in an account executive interview?

A deal walk-through, quota and attainment, a mock discovery call, a lost deal, forecasting, a silent champion, discount requests, pipeline prioritisation, why you are leaving and why this company.

Will they check my attainment numbers?

Often, through references and sometimes documents. Give honest numbers with context; a below-quota year explained well is fine.

How do I handle the mock discovery call?

Ask about their current process, the pain and its cost, who else is affected, budget and timeline, and the next step. Do not pitch until you have the picture.

What do sales managers look for?

Real numbers, a repeatable process, discovery discipline, negotiation that protects value and honesty about losses.
